Basement. Let’s start with the most obvious — basements. The top of the basement wall where the cement meets the wood frame is one of the most common areas where air leaks occur. To take care of this, be sure to seal any gaps or cracks around your band joists. 

Attic. Attics also let in a lot of unwanted air, so always make sure to check behind your insulation for leaks. If you find any, make sure to seal them so that you’ll have a more comfortable, energy-efficient home.  

Fireplace. A fireplace is a great thing to have, but it’s very prone to expensive air leaks. When not in use, keep the flue tightly closed, be sure to check your chimney periodically for leaks and seal any that you find using fire-resistant materials such as furnace cement caulk.

Plumbing, wiring and ducting. Pipes, ductwork and electrical wiring go through holes in your walls, floors and ceiling. They’re big contributors to drafts, so be sure to check for leaks and seal any you find.
